Don McCullin, born on 9th October 1935 is a British Photojournalist. Particularly recognised for his war photography and images of urban strife. His career began in 1959 which specialised in examining the underside of society, and his photographs have depicted the unemployed, downtrodden and the impoverished. One of the British new papers featured Don McCullin as being the master of photography: ‘From the horrors of war in Vietnam to extreme poverty closer to home, Don McCullin’s camera has captured it all. Named master of photography at Photo London 2016, here are some of the greatest images of his career. (theguadian,2016) Don McCullin captured the darker side of already intrinsically dark conflicts in Vietnam, Cambodia, Uganda and more. In 1968, his Nikon camera stopped a bullet intended for him. (D. McCullin, 1968) Don McCullin's most celebrated image is his portrait of a dazed American soldier, entitled Shellshocked US Marine, Hue, Vietnam. This photography was taken during the battle for the city of Hue in the 1960’s, this photograph says as much about the effects of war on the individual psyche as many of McCullin's more graphic depictions of conflict and carnage. The eyes that are staring out beneath the helmet are not staring at the camera lens, but beyond it, into nowhere. (D. McCullin, 1982) This photograph features a Palestinian woman returning to the ruins of her house in Beirut in 1982. (D. McCullin, 1971) A scene from the Bogside in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1971. Don McCullin has captured some of the most famous images associated with conflict in the 20th and 21st centuries, from the Vietnam war to current conflicts in the Middle East. This photojournalist is best known for his moving, often harrowing images taken during the wars in Vietnam and Cambodia. Although he captured most of his images with the digital camera he prefers the film camera and says “If I’d have used a digital camera I would have made that look attractive, but I wanted you to get the feeling that it was cold and lonely,” (D. McCullin,2015). The most feature that he dislikes is how digital cameras allow for manipulation of colors. References:

Some about Tyler: This is Steve Tyler, He is twenty-two years old, from Oxford but based in Oxford-shire Nottingham Shire London. He is a freelance photographer. BA (Hons) photography graduate from Nottingham Trent University with a 1st class Honours degree. Steve Tyler has done some projects regarding Topologies in which two of them are: Topologies of mass consumption and Toy. Tyler himself stated: “Typology is the study of types, and a photographic typology is a suite of images related forms, shot in consistent, repetitive manner” (S. Tyler, 2011) (S. Tyler, 2011) This is a series that Tyler has done: Typologies of mass consumption It shows a wide range of typologies that he is surrounded by. It also represents him for the fact that he is an organised person and always want things to be in correct order. TOY: This is a series of photographs of toys (in a topology manner). For Tyler toys are a key expressive component in any young child’s life, they are also a method of education and learning about the world around us. For Tyler himself doing this project was a trace of his past, memory of his childhood playing with his mass collection of toys. Tyler Stated: “A chance for me to recreate my favourite scenes from various comics and films” (S. Tyler, 2011) Topologies of mass consumption: Steve Tyler is currently exploring the idea of mass consumption and how much we consume as individuals on a daily basis. He is shadowing his close friends and family by photographing certain items they consume over a period of time. References:

He started to be interested in photography in 2010, while traveling. During his traveling he realized that Adesokan was always more interested in the people around a particular sight than in the sight itself. Adde Adesokan’s photography is mostly referred as street photography or documentary. Adesokan believes in photographic skill, vision and a will of constant improvement. From his work one can see that there is a variety of shots and that his photographs truly depict the country he is in and its people. One of his projects is called: TRIPTYCHS OF STRANGERS Adde Adesokan states that: ‘Street photography is about the moment and sometimes doing portraits felt to me as some sort of backdoor to a satisfying day of street photography.’ As a photographer he does not find it hard to talk to strangers once he starts shooting and be in the mood. At first Adesokan thought about shooting 100 strangers or starting a 365 days’ project, but after two weeks of doing headshots he felt that the project needed to be pushed to a new idea. The idea of triptychs (a picture or relief carving on three panels, typically hinged together vertically and used as an altarpiece) began when he first saw a horizontal triptych at an art gallery in his hometown. He has been traveling a lot for more than two years and since the project started he feels that it is more fun. He feels that this project is a better excuse to talk to a stranger than an international street project. Adesokan looks around places and love to hang out. When someone looks interesting he just go for it. Starting by introducing the project and by the time and explain everything they go “And now me?” Most people are flattered because I’m not only up to take their picture. I really like to know who they are and what they do, to reveal their personality in these three shots. (Adesokan, 2012) This project is definitely about people and their stories. Fashion and beauty are relative and don’t have a strong focus. (oitzarisme,2012 - Adde Adesokan) This project was done in just three pictures on each person, but there are not just random pictures, he managed to reveal their personalities. I went through the images without reading anything about them and guess what they do and after I read about them and my guess was good about them. (oitzarisme,2012 - Adde Adesokan) My first guess was that this person is some kind of a photographer, from the second image, him holding the camera. His name is Kim TAE HWAN and he is a fashion/Editorial photographer mostly working for Elle Magazine (oitzarisme,2012 - Adde Adesokan) My first guess about this woman was that she is some kind of a tribe person and her work is doing rice. Her name is JAA and she is a member an Ethnic group known as Red DZAO (they can be recognized from their red turbans). They make their living from cultivating corn and rice. (oitzarisme,2012 - Adde Adesokan) My first guess about this person that he is a painter and by looking at the background I thought of a graffiti person. His name is Georg and he plays basketball in a club called Empor, his favourite music genre is hip-hop. (These I did not notice there aren’t an indications). But Georg is a Graffiti artist; he has been spraying for more than fifteen years. Adesokan asked him if he ever get busted which he did in the past. The first time was at the age of sixteen. This review will be analysing the interview with Laura Pannack, published on the 26th February 2014 by Rave Lates. This interview was about hew way of working as a photographer such as her flow of editing, how she interacts with her clients.
During this interview Pannack said that she does a lot of voluntary work by working with NGO’s, she also mentioned that her day to day life is all about shooting and editing, whilst stating that she does not have a working flow when it comes to editing. Another way of shooting using shallow depth of field for the fact that this shows intimacy in her clients whilst this matter takes a lot on concentration stating that she still prefers shooting in analogue mode using film to show everything in a single frame, resulting in this being her way of how she connects with people when shooting. Pannack argued that while on the job she doesn’t go there because it is her duty, she like to meet new people however she considers her projects to be an academic point of view for the fact that she is always wanting to learn new things. Since this industry involves a lot of work Pannack stated that sometimes she will not have the time to meet all the people involved, whilst when so do Pannack takes her time in getting to know them according to what the shoot requires. This interview was beneficial for the fact that it gives an overview of a professional photographer about the way she works and interacting with people. |
